Fortnite just kicked off a massive battle against Google and Apple

Until this week, if you wanted to play Epic’s massively popular battle royale game,  Fortnite , you could hop into the Apple App Store or Google Play store, download it, and bask in the cartoony mayhem that has earned it more than tens of millions of active players every month. That’s no longer the case—at least for the moment. One of the world’s most popular games disappeared from the most popular app stores and it all started with a sale.  Epic typically charges $9.99 for a grip of V-bucks, the game’s in-world currency, which players can use to buy aesthetic upgrades to their characters or dances. V-bucks can also buy Battle Pass subscriptions, which grant them extra XP and the chance to unlock game items. Last week, the company dropped the price to just $7.99 if you bought the currency straight through Epic’s systems rather than going through the App Store. That’s a great deal for players, but a bum deal for Apple and Google, which take a cut of in-app purchases made on their plat

Gadgets are so central to our lives that when they break, we do whatever’s necessary to get them functioning again. That includes knowing when a problem is beyond our expertise and that it’s time to turn to the professionals. Apple device repairs If you’ve got an Apple laptop or phone, it’s covered by   a one-year warranty   from the moment you buy it. If something breaks before that year is up, and i

Watch a computer clobber a human pilot in a simulated fighter jet duel

Fighter jets need humans to fly them, but someday, that could change. This week, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency—better known as DARPA—hosted a virtual  Top Gun -style competition in which various artificial intelligence algorithms flew simulated jets in digital dogfights. No actual planes were in the air, but the goal was to see which AI agent could provide the most formidable fighter. The event kicked off on Tuesday morning, and on Thursday, the strongest AI battled against a simulated  F-16  operated by a real flesh-and-blood pilot. The event this week was the third stage in what’s called the  AlphaDogfight Trials . The first trial in the series, held last fall, was very much rookie algorithms trying to figure out aviation fundamentals, explains Col. Dan Javorsek, the manager of the event at DARPA and a former F-16 aviator and test pilot. “What you were basically watching was the AI agents learning to fly the plane,” Javorsek says. (His call sign is “Animal,” a refere
